Christmas Party Pictures!

Our lovely photographer, Calvin, sent me some pictures he took on Saturday night.  I hope everybody had a great time and we missed those who couldn't be with us.  All of the food was delicious and the company and laughter was even better.

Click here to get my take on the Widow's Christmas Brunch from last weekend.  I do want to thank each of you for your willingness to pitch in and do whatever is necessary to get the job done.

Upcoming Events and Breakfast List!

Sunday evening, September 26th is the annual church family picnic at Westside Elementary at 5p.m.  The church is providing chicken strips from Crossroads Cafe at 5:30 p.m., and each lifegroup has been asked to bring something.  The Aldridge Class has been asked to bring salad - doesn't say which kind - so I'm going to assume whatever you feel led to bring.  Don't forget to bring a serving utensil and label your name on it if you want it back.  Don't forget to bring your own seating - chairs, blankets, etc.  We'll resume our 5 p.m. bible study on October 3rd.

If you're new to the group, we're excited that you've come to our class blog.  Our class meets on Sunday mornings at 9 p.m., and we'd love to have you visit again next weekend. One of the things we've started doing is bringing breakfast for everyone to enjoy on Sunday mornings.  Here's the list of those who've signed up through November.

Oct. 10:  McGarveys
Oct. 17: McEntires

More Diapers!

One baby down...three more to go!

This coming Sunday night we'll have our next diaper showers for Kristin Steelman and Erika Theising at 5 p.m. at Robin Veazey's house.  Please note that we are leaving the guys at home for this fellowship, but please bring the children.  You should have gotten an email from Robin this morning asking to bring certain things, as well as her address.  If you didn't get that email, please let me know and I'll make sure you get it.

Continue to pray for Sabrina as well - she's up to bat for the next baby to arrive, and Kristin and Erika are on deck!

Good Things are Happening Here!

I'll be honest.  I'm a little overwhelmed today at the whirlwind of prayers being answered.  Seriously - God is so good, and we have a lot to be rejoicing over tonight!

First things first.  please welcome Kellan Lee Rowe to our Lifegroup! He was born last night at 10:56 p.m. and weighted 7 lbs, 10 oz, and was 21 inches long!  There is a sign-up list to bring Amanda and Nathan food, and if you didn't get that, please let me know and I will forward it to you.

Secondly, we would also like to congratulate Calvin and Ginger on the birth of their third grandchild.  Daniel Kemp Aldridge made his grand entrance early Tuesday morning and everybody is doing great.  For those of you who don't know, Calvin's middle name is Kemp, and he is so proud of his new little namesake.

And last, but not least,  let's all say thanks for a safe return for Jeremy Hefner.  He gets back tonight from a 4-month tour of Iraq, and I KNOW Kelley and Ryan will be glad to see him.  Don't forget to continue to pray for a safe and quick return for Ryan McDonald.  He'll be making his way home soon as well.

I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend.  Remember that Lifegroup does not meet this coming Sunday, and there will be only one service at 10:30 a.m.

I'm personally so thankful for all of you in our life!

Happy Birthday!

Today is Robin's birthday!  We hope you have a great day!

Also, be praying for Calvin and Ginger's son and daughter-in-law.  Baby Daniel could be making an appearance at any time now!  Pray for a healthy delivery and a calm presence.

We'll keep everybody posted on Baby Aldridge Watch 2010.

Dessert Club - Thursday Night!

Hey girls - we're having Dessert Club Thursday night at Kristin Steelman's house at 7 p.m.  It's going to be a good time (as always), so come and bring a friend.  If you don't know where she lives, leave a comment and I'll get directions to you.

Last night we showered Sabrina and Amanda for their bundles of joy that are coming soon.  I think God has blessed all of the preggo women today with a little bit cooler temptature and a breeze.  Praise Him!

Sorry this space has been void for a while - I promise to do a better job of staying connected.

Have a great week!

How Do You Communicate?

We had a great sermon on Sunday morning about communication.  Since that's what I do for a living, I found it most interesting and have thought about how I practice it daily.  (Most the time, I don't do it as well as I should).

Here's what Bro. Greg put up on his blog earlier:

Principles For Effective Communication Ephesians 4:29-32

God dictates how we communicate because it is a spiritual matter.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit”

Principles – “no corrupt communication”

“what is necessary for edification”
“the heart matters”
“kindness is a matter of being like Jesus”

How to-

Guard your heart

Examine your speech patterns

Practice being positive

Practical Applications from Proverbs

1. Actually SPEAK to your friends.

Proverbs 15:23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat of its fruit.

2. Speak to draw a person to you and build up your relationship.

Proverbs 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

Proverbs 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks down the spirit.

3. Never tear down your friend, especially with personal attacks.

Proverbs 18:19 A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, and contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Proverbs 12:18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.

4. There is no reason to argue in anger.

Proverbs 20:3 It is honorable for a man to stop striving since any fool can start a quarrel.

Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

5. If the tension gets too high, then do not speak.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.

Proverbs 13:3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

Proverbs 16: 32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

6. Listen more than you speak.

Proverbs 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.

Proverbs 15:28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

7. Men – Guard the tendency to fib, exaggerate, embellish, or edit the facts.

Proverbs 2:24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you.

Note: 21 times Proverbs directly condemns deceit or lying.
8.Women – Guard the tendency to be harsh, critical, and contentious.

Proverbs 21:9 Better to dwell in the corner of an attic, than in a house with a contentious woman.

Note: Proverbs states this warning 5 separate times.

9. Tearing someone down is not humor and it is not funny.

Proverbs 26:18-19 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I was only joking.”

10. Train yourself to speak positively and add value to your friend.

Proverbs 16:23 The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips.

Proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

Post 4th of July

Hey everybody,

Hope ya'll had a great 4th of July holiday. I had 4 days off in a row, so being back at work today is tough.  But at least it's a 4-day week and Friday will be here soon!

Be praying for Kari and Johnathan Tate.  We're on baby watch for tomorrow, so hopefully Abigail Grace will make it here without much delay.

I'm sure there are other requests, so if you have one, leave it in the comments section.

I don't have much else going on except to put the link for this week's First Look:

P.S.
Girl - we're having Dessert Club at Ashley's house on Thursday at 7 p.m. Email her for directions to her house.

TGIF!

So is anybody else glad it's Friday? I had a company event last night at the Travs, and it was very warm and muggy, and I didn't get home until late so I am worn out! Hope everybody has had a great week and will have a fun weekend.

Don't forget tomorrow at 2 p.m. is the wedding of Laura Edwards and Daniel Melton. The ceremony and reception is at the church.

Sunday night, the girls will meet for our Sunday Topics Series in Room 222. Erica is going to lead us in a discussion about conflict with spouse. (We've all been there!)

And lastly, here are a couple of pictures I took from the Hill's Going Away Party.  We will definitely miss them, but know that God has a plan for them in the Arkansas River Valley.  (They sold their house in 3 days!Only God Himself can do that in this economy!)  Praise Him! Calvin took more pictures and I will try to get them posted soon.

See everybody on Sunday!

We like to party all the time!

Lunch was great yesterday you guys! It's nice when we can all visit and support our local businesses at the same time.

I wanted to give ya'll a heads up on some upcoming activities for June:

  • Sunday, June 13 @ 5 p.m. - Going Away party for Katy and Jacob Hill. Yeah, they're leaving, and we're happy about it in the "we know this is God's plan for you, but we really really really wish you could stay here" way.  Appetizer pot-luck is the menu, so bring your favorite and we'll send them off in the good old Baptist way.  This will be held at church, but specific place TBD.
  • Monday, June 21 @ 6 p.m. - Diaper Shower for Kari and Johnathon Tate at Calvin and Ginger's
house. Not sure about the menu just yet, so stay tuned.
  • Saturday, June 26 @ 2 p.m. - Daniel Melton and Laura Edwards will be getting married at FBC Cabot!
Here's the breakfast line-up for Summer Sunday's. If you didn't get a Sunday, then we'll let you sign-up first when we start a new list in August.
  • June 13:  Veazeys
  • June 20:  McDonalds
  • June 27:  Aldridges
  • July 4:  No Sunday School
  • July 11:  Salmons
  • July 18:  Keenans
  • July 25:  Acrees
  • Aug 1:  Rowes
  • Aug. 8:  Meltons
  • Aug. 15: Langehaugs
  • Aug. 22: Haywoods

On Sunday, we talked about Jesus walking on the water and feeding the 5,000.  Those were stories I have probably heard 5,000 times, but heard them in a brand new way.  Remember the verse for this week:  "Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4.

This week, we will continue on with Mark 7:  Are there barriers in your life that keep you from drawing closer in your personal relationship with Christ? Could you spot them if there were? What about your religious practices or traditions? Could they, or do they, keep you from a more intimate relationship with God? This week as you study God’s word, ask Him to show you any barriers in your life and to help you break them down. May not be as easy as it sounds... Here is the week's lesson.

As always, I hope you guys have a great week and if there's anything you'd like me to post, just email me.  I would like this to become more of a dialogue, so please please please leave a comment!

Reviving the Blog

Hey everybody,

Hope you guys are all having a great summer so far. I really can't believe it's June - where did the time go? I thought I would try and be better about updating the blog, and if anybody wants to share in that, please let me know and I can get you set up. Its really quite easy.

Anyway, just to recap last month, we had a diapers and wipes shower for Leah and Justin Acree at our house. It was just a little on the warm side, but we enjoyed having everybody over that evening.  Baby Cady is due in the next week, so as soon as she makes her arrival, we will let everyone know. I will also be sending around a sign-up sheet to provide the Acrees dinner, so be on the lookout for that in the next few weeks.

Earlier in the month, the girls went to Little Rock and had dinner at PF Changs and then went to the mall for pedicures.  I didn't take any pictures, so you'll have to take my word for it. It was very fun though, and we need to have another girls night soon.  The girls are also doing another bible study on Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, and we'll start back on Sunday night after several weeks off.  If you don't have a book, we still want you to join us. It's a great time of learning God's word and fellowship too.

This coming Sunday, we will be back together for Sunday School at 9 a.m., and worship at 10:30 a.m.  Here is the lesson for Sunday if you want to read ahead.  At first I wasn't sure about this church-provided lessons, but I have really come to enjoy them. What about ya'll? (You can leave a comment or type in the chat box).

We have a couple of guys deployed right now, so please remember them and their families in your prayers. Also remember the pregnant girls: Erica, Sabrina, Kristin, Amanda, and Kari.  We are a fertile bunch if nothing else!  We also have a wedding coming up this month (Laura Edwards and Daniel Melton), and there are a few people that will be doing a lot of traveling as well. Keep those in your prayers too. If you have a special request that you'd like to get out to the class, email me (lhaywood@spp.org).

On a final note, if you're going to be at church on Sunday, let's try and go to lunch after worship service. It'll be a good excuse not to cook!

Happy Friday everybody and have a great weekend!

Frazzled Female

Some of us girls have started the Frazzled Female bible study on Sunday nights. It's very different from Beth Moore (i.e. not as much homework), but I'm finding that it's hitting very close to home. The first passage was about Mary and Martha, and let me just say - I AM MARTHA! Especially when it comes time to have company over or go somewhere.  But I think the point of the lesson is that we should be more like Mary. Just relax and sit at the feet of Jesus.

So who have you been this week? Mary or Martha?

Activities Abound!

Hey ya'll - hope you're enjoying this post-Holiday season weather we've been having. Nothing like some snow to start off a full work week. There are a few things to tell you, and I know you will be excited about them.

First of all, Sunday School has a new name. It's now called LifeGroups, and you can read all about it here: http://www.fbccabot.org/lifegroups.  There are weekly devotions that go along with Sunday's lesson, and you can print out a copy for next week (January 10). http://www.fbccabot.org/assets/1222/first_look_jan_10.pdf. I know I often struggle with what to read in the bible without a guide, so this will be a great help for me. I will try and post the next week's on the following Monday.

Next Sunday (January 10th) we will be having a diaper shower for Jeremy, Kelley, and Ryan Hefner. Baby Ryan made a surprise appearance on New Year's Eve, so we will all get a chance to ooo and ahhh over him. Bring something good to eat and some diapers/wipes.

There is also a calendar for meals for the Hefners. We are going to start next Monday and do something every other day. I believe there are two days available - January 25 and January 31st. Click here to sign-up: http://www.carecalendar.org/logon/29298 (the code is 6590).

We will also start back our Ladies Bible Study on the 10th at 5 p.m., so it will be a full day! (I believe the Men have started back their study as well). Come prepared to share how the holidays were and what you'd like to discuss in 2010.

If I've left off anything, please leave a comment! I am so blessed to be in your circle of friends!

-Laura
